Seminar Description:
This seminar provides an overview of common turf pests and problems affecting sports turf, with an emphasis on identification, monitoring, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and proper timing of management practices. Participants will explore common weeds, insects, nematodes, salts, and turf diseases, including Rapid Blight, and discuss how environmental stress can contribute to turf pest and disease problems.
Learning Objectives:
1) Identify common turf weeds, insects, nematodes, and disease problems affecting stressed or damaged sports turf.
2)Understand the importance of IPM timing when monitoring and managing turf pests based on pest life cycles, seasonality, and turf conditions.
3) Recognize and evaluate turf stress factors, including salts, drought, and Rapid Blight, and use appropriate IPM resources and management strategies to address these problems.
Bill Blackman
SiteOne
Bill Blackman from SiteOne is a seasoned turfgrass industry leader with over three decades of experience. Currently, he is on the PAPA Board of Directors and is an agronomic advisor and Pest Control Advisor (PCA).
He has served on the Boards of Directors for both the California and Southern California Golf Course Superintendents Associations, and was their first voting Commercial Member.
Bill has spoken at national and international conferences, including the GCSAA National Convention, the National Recreation and Parks Association, and the Australian Racecourse Managers Association. He has spoken professionally over 100 times for CEU hours and has moderated the National Conference of the NTRA Superintendent’s Annual Conference. He has also served as Associate Faculty and Program Coordinator at Mt. San Jacinto College, teaching turfgrass science, soil fertility, and pesticide safety.
Bill was also Educator of the Year 2000 at PAPA and voted Outstanding Member of 2025 by a Toastmasters Club and completed his role as Club President at the end of June.
