This seminar will provide a practical overview of common mite pests, with a focus on accurate identification, recognizing damage, and selecting effective management strategies.
Attendees will learn how to identify common mites, including spider mites and eriophyid mites, and how to distinguish the characteristic damage they cause to plants. The presentation will also explore the magnification tools, microscopes, and identification apps that can be useful for accurately identifying these small and often difficult-to-see pests. In addition to identification techniques, the seminar will cover miticides and other management tools, discussing options that can be used effectively against mite populations. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to recognize mite problems early, confirm their identity, and choose appropriate tools for managing them. Learning Objectives:
1) Identify common mite pests: Recognize common mites, including spider mites and eriophyid mites, using visual characteristics and appropriate magnification or identification tools.
2) Recognize and confirm mite damage: Distinguish characteristic mite damage on plants and use microscopes, magnification tools, and identification apps to confirm mite presence and identity.
3)Select effective management strategies: Evaluate miticides and other management tools to determine appropriate strategies for managing mite populations and preventing further plant damage.
Eric Middleton
Eric Middleton works with UC Cooperative Extension as an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Advisor focused on arthropod pests. Although he is based in San Diego County, Eric is also responsible for IPM needs in Orange and Los Angeles counties. Eric works with growers and communities wherever pests are in issue, including in nursery and floriculture production, landscapes, citrus and avocado groves, and the many small farms found in Southern California.
