Seminar Description:
California’s landscapes have been burning for thousands of years. Nothing will change that in the foreseeable future. In fact, just the opposite—our state’s landscapes will burn at greater frequency and ferocity. Join environmental horticulturalist, Doug Kent as he shares the strategies that will protect your family, your property, and your community.



Kent will be focusing on structures, defensible space, and the role of plants in fire protection. He is the author of the best-selling book on fire protection in the U.S., teaches at many colleges, and has been working to create fire-protected properties since 1994. Kent’s presentations are professional, educational and dynamic.

Douglas Kent

Doug Kent is an author, activist, and educator in ecological land management. He has been exploring the ecology of human sustainability for over 40 years. He is the author of eight environmental land management books, including Regenerating Essential Goods and Services in Urban Landscapes (Routledge, 2024), Firescaping (Wilderness Press, 2019, 2nd Ed.); Foraging Southern California (Adventure Publication, 2019); California Friendly (MUNI, 2017); and Ocean Friendly Gardens (Surfrider Foundation, 2009). Doug also teaches ecological land management at the Center for Regenerative Studies (Cal Poly Pomona), UCLA Extension, and USC Architecture.
