Trees in Extreme Climate & Common Problems of Trees: How We Can Reduce or Mitigate These Problems

EXTREME weather is here to stay. Are your trees prepared for it? What used to be extreme, seems to be the new norm. Extreme drought, extreme wind events, extreme heat. Trees are slow-growing, woody plants, and need time to adapt. We can improve their tolerance to these extremes, and improve the likelihood that they will survive these events. This talk is geared toward improving tree growing conditions to best foster optimal health. This optimal health & structure is key for trees as they experience heatwaves, drought conditions, and wind events. We will discuss in detail the biology of trees, how heat and drought affect them, what is going on vascularly, and how prolonged stress can set them up for secondary issues, such as pathogens and insect infestations. Learn about easy management practices that can "buffer" the trees and help to reduce the stress. Healthy trees, like healthy people, are better able to defend themselves from stress and decline. Also, how do we improve tree architecture and structure to tolerate wind events. Science and research has developed strategies that we can employ to reduce the likelihood of large branch or tree failures. Learning these strategies is easy, and there are great resources that can help you articulate this to your clients.
