Webinar Description:

Cities Across America

American cities are in a period of rapid change, and greater focus is needed to make them livable, convenient, beautiful, enduring, and environmentally responsible.

This moves urban design to the center of decision-making for both private investors and public leaders, and it requires strategic rethinking of the dominance of automobiles in our daily lives.

This talk will explore new thinking about street design, including the latest illustrated catalog of Essential Street Types and “Ten Ingredients for Car-Optional Neighborhoods.”

Learning Objectives:
1) To articulate core principles of good street design, including the direct impact of the physical environment on safety, quality of life, and fitness of the ecosystem, and the importance of good street design to mixed-use development, walkability, and the restoration of existing urban centers and towns.
2) To define a context-sensitive approach to urban design and policy interventions, including a description of Five Basic Characteristics of people-friendly streets and Ten Ingredients for Car-Optional Neighborhoods.
3) To explore historical and cultural legacies that influence urbanism and design practices, informed by both past experiences and emerging knowledge.
