Attendees will learn how to design and cultivate environments that prioritize ecological health and sustainability, regardless of whether native plants are used.

The speaker will explore the benefits of no-till gardening, such as soil preservation, enhanced biodiversity, and improved water retention, while also discussing how to integrate permaculture techniques to mimic natural ecosystems. By blending innovative gardening practices with a holistic approach to land stewardship, this talk highlights ways to foster sustainability and long-term ecological balance in any landscape, whether native or not. Nonnative plant selection tends to have showier flowers.

Learning Objectives:
1.Current practices vs Permaculture Landscape Design and why Permaculture benefits the earth while addressing the fires we have in California.
2. What Permaculture design options we have and plant selection that includes sustainable ground cover shrubs and trees.
3. How Permaculture Landscapes improve plant and human health.

Dane was the speaker for the Model Water Efficiency Ordinance who covered the topic of plants and soils. He is the instructor for the Huntington Beach Senior Center teaching “Gardening for Seniors.” Since Permaculture involves a “no till” approach with less labor, this is a great concept for Seniors and for improving their gut health.
