Identification & Management of Abiotic Plant Stresses

by Terry Vassey

Seminar Price: $60

CEUs: APLD, NALP, PGMS, QWEL

Room: TBD

This course will be designed to help the attendees to learn the signs and symptoms of non-pathological plant stresses. Topics will include environmental and chemical plant and soil stresses and will discusses management solutions to include plant selection, environmental protection and strategies to avoid or eliminate these problems.

Terry Vassey

Superintendent

Norman Course at PGA West

Dr. Vassey, originally from Atlanta and formally a professor of turfgrass, landscape and golf course management at Cal Poly, SLO, is now the Superintendent at the Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, CA. His interests are in sustainable turfgrass management, environmental stewardship, native and ornamental grass establishment and management, and golf course management practices. He is associated with many turfgrass and golf course management organizations and contributes often to their educational efforts.

He received his B.S. degree from the University of Georgia in 1980, his M.S. from Iowa State University (1983), and his Ph.D. in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry from the University of Missouri in 1986. From there he completed two Post Docs; one at the University of Illinois and one at the University of Wisconsin.

Previous TLE Presentations

2015 - Managing Summer Turfgrass Stress

This course is designed to prepare the turfgrass professional for the proper management of pre-during and post-summer stress. We will discuss the physiology result in poor turfgrass quality during these hot dry times. We will also discuss how the management practices that help grasses withstand stress. Water, fertilizer, pest control and cultivation strategies will be a part of these topics as they related to best management practices during summer stress periods.

2013 – Turfgrass Disease Management

This course will focus on the environmental conditions that favor disease outbreaks, their (disease) identification and the best control measures to combat them. The material presented will help each participant better manage turf conditions to prevent diseases instead of treating a constant problem. Each turfgrass species used in California will be examined for the types and control measures for the disease most common to them.

2012 – Nitrogen Fertilization for Turfgrass

This presentation will discuss the significance of nitrogen as a molecule, and its importance to the many plant functions as it relates growth, color, and turfgrass quality. Attendees will also learn about the relationship of nitrogen to the effectiveness of other nutrients as well as how fertilization fits into a best management strategy for over all successful turfgrass management.

2011 – Water Conservation and Drought Management

This presentation will focus on issues facing the turfgrass, golf course and sports field industry as it relates the use, quality, and availability of water for the future. Many practitioners will be faced with use restrictions, water of lower quality, and perception problems while at the same time be required to maintain standards even more. In times when the use of turfgrass continues to be reviled as a waste of valuable resources, many find it difficult to maintain these expectations. Such things as irrigation philosophy, new equipment, and techniques to better utilize available water will be discussed.

2011 – Sustainable Turfgrass Management

This presentation will focus on the most significant best management practices that provide the best turfgrass quality without the use of excess resources or any negative impact to the environment.. Topics will include cultivation, turfgrass selection, proper water, soil, fertilization, and disease, stress, and pest management for best results.
