Jim Baird, Ph.D.Turfgrass SpecialistUniversity of California, RiversideJim Baird has been the Turfgrass Specialist at the University of California, Riverside since 2008. His primary responsibilities include conducting research and providing outreach for the California turfgrass industry. Jim was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado. He received a B.S. in Landscape Horticulture in 1985 from Colorado State University, a M.S. in Agronomy & Soils in 1989 and a Ph.D. in Botany in 1993, both from Auburn University. Prior to UCR, Jim was an Assistant Professor of Turfgrass Research & Teaching at Oklahoma State and Michigan State Universities, and an Agronomist for the United States Golf Association Green Section. Previous TLE Presentations2018 – How to Have a Lawn and Save Water, Too…It's Not Rocket Science!This class will address the basics of lawn care with emphasis on water conservation including: turfgrass species/cultivar selection; cultural practices (mowing, fertility, etc.); and irrigation requirements, practices, and troubleshooting. 2013 – Weed Control Options for TurfgrassThis presentation will focus on chemical options and strategies for controlling the most prevalent weed species in Southern California, including existing and soon-to-be-registered herbicides. 2013 – Choosing the Right Turfgrass Species for CaliforniaIn California, we can grow just about every known turfgrass species. However, not all species are best adapted for every location and intended use. This presentation will address the advantages and disadvantages of the major turfgrass species including areas of adaptation and recommended cultivars. 2012 – Tips for Optimizing Overseeding & TransitionThis course will utilize existing knowledge and current UCR research to address advantages and disadvantages of overseeding turf in Southern California, common turfgrass species and seeding rates, strategies for suppressing growth of existing turfgrass species prior to and during overseeding in the fall, as well as for smooth transitioning in the spring. 2012 – Turfgrass Salinity ManagementThis course will provide an overview of turfgrass soil and water salinity issues including common causes, proper diagnoses, and recommended practices to manage salinity.
