Welcome to Beetlemania: Identification of Friend or Foe or Those You Can Ignore

We will review the most common beetles found in the urban landscape and identify their life cycle and the role they play in the environment. We will identify which are beneficial to trees and which do not harm trees. Then we will identify beetles that attack trees and the level of damage they do, as well as review IPM programs to manage these pests. Lastly we will review invasive beetles and how best to manage them.

Dawn Fluharty currently serves as a Regional Technical Manager for Arborjet in Woburn, MA, an ISA national member.

In her current role, Dawn provides training and support to arborists, foresters, municipalities and industry leaders, who are evaluating treatment options for tree pests & diseases across the northwestern United States.

Dawn has enjoyed 16 years in the green industry including: sales and sales management, horticultural education and training and operations management. She has her PCA (Pest Control Advisor) license and is a member of CAPCA (California Association of Pest Control Advisors) and the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. She also holds her QAL and continuously supports PAPA (Pesticide Applicators Professional Association) as a board member.

She is a member of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture, OAN (Oregon Association of Nurseries) and is a member of the Arbor Day Foundation. She has a degree in Environmental Horticultural Sciences with a minor in Soil Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

2018 – We Are Being Invaded: By Invasive Tree Pests & Diseases

This will be a review of current invasive tree pests and diseases in Southern California while also introducing new invasive pests and diseases making their way into our area. We will review pest life cycles as well as how to prevent and treat for these pests.

2017 - Update on Trunk Injection Technology With Chemical Options for Treating Local Tree Pests & Diseases

The course will begin with a review of how trunk injection works and then go into new equipment being used. We will also discuss what chemicals are used for trunk injection and what type of pest or disease they treat. Lastly, we will review local pests and diseases and what treatment options are available.

2014 - Treating Invasive Pests & Diseases in Trees with Trunk Injections

This course will discuss the scope of current invasive insect species and how they are treated using trunk injection as an effective and environmentally way to treat trees. Also discussed are the ways to set up a research trial on insects which includes the new Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB), which is poised to inflict major damage to our urban forest here in southern California. An example trial established this year at some local botanical gardens in southern California will be covered on controlling PSHB.
