Arizona legislation regarding landscape architecture licensure is up for sunset as the board is set to expire on July 1st without it.

The bill, HB 2253, proposes a continuation of The Arizona State Board of Technical Registration (BTR) for eight years. Without it, the board will expire by July 1, 2024.

The current legislation will also repeal two sections of the current statute that outline the termination of the BTR on July 1, 2032, and relevant statutes, on January 1, 2033. The bill includes a purpose statement that emphasizes the legislature's intent to continue BTR for public safety and welfare through the regulation of professionals including landscape architects, architects, geologists, home inspectors, and land surveyors.

BTR released a statement asking that those concerned with the board's mission write a letter to their prospective State Senator. Meanwhile, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) released a statement in response to the BTR's request for letters. AIA is backing the bill and the letter explained that the continuation was not placed on the agenda and therefore, has effectively died. Further, the language will now be integrated into the budget negotiations. The board is continuing to work, and AIA advocates are working to move forward with the continuance. At the time of publication, ASLA Arizona has not yet released a statement announcing its stance on the issue.
